We invite you to join us as we return for another transformative Yoga journey to our beloved Nepal. This 10-day retreat brings together the practice of Ashtanga Yoga, with Buddhist and Hindu teachings and visits to spectacular ancient temples and historic sites, in the land and culture that helped to write the biography of the Yoga we know today. Several of these sites are on UNESCO's world heritage list, and being present in these spaces is transformative and deeply moving. 

If you feel called, then join us for what will be a life-changing journey. We will practice Yoga in a Tibetan monastery, and visit the medieval city of Patan. We will trek through otherworldly landscapes at the foot of the Himalayas, and visit the holiest Buddhist and Hindu sites including Bouddhanath and Pashupatinath. 

There is no better guide for this unique journey then the Kathmandu local and connoisseur, Ellen Johannesen, who has over 20 years of Yoga teaching experience. Ellen also holds a Masters Degree in Buddhist studies and is a translator for Tibetan languages. 

Easter break period specifically and the month of April generally represent the ideal time to visit Nepal, with warm temparatures and higher visibility of the majestic Himalayas!

Daily morning Ashtanga Yoga self-practice assisted by Ellen, for practitioners working on the Primary, Intermediate and Advanced Series.

Beginners will be individually assisted and lovingly introduced to Ashtanga Yoga.

The afternoon classes will be inspired by the day trips and excursions, and include meditation, a restorative practice, talks on various philosophical and technical aspects of Yoga, as well as pranayama (breathing). The philosophy lectures will introduce Buddhist teachings and familiarize you with Nepals spirutal heritage. 

Example of daily program:

7.00 am - 9.30am: Morning meditation and Ashtanga Yoga (Mysore-style self practice guided by Ellen)*


11.30am  - 12.30pm:  Lectures: Introduction to Buddhist based Yoga philosophy, Buddhist art, religious myths and history of Nepal. On some days hikes to temples, monasteries and local villages.


4.00pm - 6.00 pm:  Practice and Theory workshops alternating between Ashtanga Yoga method and technique & Buddhist base yoga philosophy and practice


*If you are completely new to Ashtanga Yoga, we recommend that you take a beginners course prior to this retreat and learn the standing asana sequence which will suffice to participate in the retreat where you will be safely guided deeper into the sequence by Ellen. 


Daily Activities                                 

  • Day 1. Arrival to Kathmandu. Tour of the Boudha stupa, and welcome dinner. Hotel: Shambaling, Boudha. 
  • Day 2. Morning Mysore class. Exploring the spiritual hubs Boudhanath and Pashupatinath. Hotel: Shambaling, Boudha, Breakfast included.
  • Day 3-4. Morning Mysore class. Transfer to Namobuddha. 3 day Yoga retreat and treks around Namobuddha, one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. Hotel: Namobuddha Resort. All meals included.
  • Day 5. Morning Mysore class. Transfer to Patan: exploring the UNESCO protected Durbar Sq. and Patan Museum. Hotel: The Inn, Patan. Breakfast included.
  • Day 6-7. Transfer to Neydo Monastery. 2 day Yoga Retreat at the Buddhist Neydo Monastery. All meals included. Hotel: Neydo Monastery Guest House.  
  • Day 8. Transfer to Kathmandu: A day of shopping and relaxation in Thamel. Hotel: Da Lai La Boutique Hotel. Breakfast included.
  • Day 9. Check out. Breakfast included.

Hotel Shambaling, Boudhanath, a boutique hotel with quality accommodation, and an excellent restaurant, just a few minutes away from the magnificent Bouddhanath Stupa.

Neydo Monastery Guesthouse, Tucked away in the lower Himalayas, amidst the most scenic landscapes, this guesthouse is a very peaceful and serene location alongside the Neydo Tashi Choeling Monastery.

Namo Buddha Resort, Kathmandu Valley. This is a beautiful, peaceful eco-resort situated in the Nepali countryside, surrounded by farmland and forest, with a fantastic view of the mountains.

The Inn, Patan, Heritage Hotel. A beautifully restored 100-year old Newari town-house with all the original features, steps away from the artistic and secret corner of Kathmandu - and from Patan Durbar Square

Da Lai La Hotel, Kathamandu. A beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Thamel, steps away from the vibrant restaurants and shops. If you come early or stay on for a few days, make sure to join Ellen’s yoga classes at the hotel.

  • Check-in: March 23 meeting with the group at 4pm at Shambaling Hotel
  • Check-out: March 31, by 10am
  • Food is Nepali and vegetarian
  • There is a limited number of Yoga mats available, if you cannot bring your own please let us know.
  • Travel insurance is obligatory and your own responsibility
  • Please ensure that your passport is valid.
  • Please ensure you have a health, travel and cancellation insurance.
  • Make sure that you are aware of immigration/visa laws in Nepal.
